Why did you choose Blackbrook House for your wedding

We agreed to have a civil ceremony and reception all under one roof and I came across Blackbrook House while searching for venues online. The pictures on the website looked beautiful and I had to come see the place for myself, I fell in love with it, and the people, straight away and had to show my fiance (now husband),Tim.  Tim decided he wanted a venue a little closer to his family in Derby and although this was a little sad for me, I began the search again and compromised on different venue.  But then, before I put the deposit down, Tim then suggested we should have a church wedding!   The church close by to this other venue could not accommodate us so I contacted our local church who were kind enough to agree to hold the ceremony.  This meant a change of venue for the breakfast and reception and Blackbrookbrook as back in the running!.  It was fate all along!  I contacted Blackbrook House (months after I initially visited) and there was one weekend date left in 2018. I had to snap it up!

What style of wedding did you have

Well we like our superheroes and villains, in particular the Joker and Harleyquinn (from Batman) so we used a lot of purples and greens at the wedding.

This fits with the Joker’s outfit and my favourite colour, which is purple!  We also tried to keep a rustic feel to the wedding.

What was it like working with us

I felt like I was at home and we could talk for hours! You were very accommodating and patient with us. Tim especially kept changing detail at last minute so we were very grateful that you could work with us to come to a happy medium.

What were the highlights

Being able to finally get married!  Reconnecting with old friends and extended family that we hadn’t seen in years.  Enjoying this long awaited moment.

Did you enjoy planning the food experience and putting together your own menu

This was slightly difficult at first as we were given a menu option based on our original discussions on food. We got a little confused and stressed about all the different dietary requirements and guest preferences and that we would not be able to cater for them.  However, after more talks and more suggestions, we found our perfect balance.  The menu was outstanding – Chef Steve truly needs to be recognised for his effortless work on putting this menu together for us. All guests went away not just admiring the menu choice but also how amazingly it was all presented, and tasted!

Which florist did you choose and why did you choose them

Cathy at Riverside Floristry – I was recommended Cathy by Blackbrook House and could not have recommended anyone better!

She loved that I wanted purples and greens, and she was honest and open. Great to work with!

Where did you buy your dress?

Beau Belles in Spondon, Derbyshire.

I went with my bridesmaid and Maid of Honour. This was the second shop we went to that day and I am so glad we didn’t go anywhere else as I was a little disheartened at the first shop and was getting very overwhelmed trying on dresses!  Again, couldn’t have picked a better place. They were very helpful and knew what would suit me.  They were honest (and so were my bridesmaids!) with any dresses we tried on. We had so much fun and it was hardly stressful!

How did you choose your photographer?

I searched various different photographers online – majority were either out of my budget or unavailable. I came across one photographer and her online porfolio showed that the pictures she took weren’t just poses, but also pictures of moments that you would probably not be able to reproduce/recapture.  We met with the photographer and had a really good connection with her.

Tell us about your cake

Tim wanted buttercream frosting and alcohol infused, however, the alcohol infused idea was not quite working.  We had a 3 tier cake made, 3 different flavours (chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge), covered in

buttercream frosting and topped with a personalised cake topper that I ordered.  It was decorated with additional flowers that were part of the flower arrangement.

What were the highlights of your day?

 • That after 16+ years of being together, we finally tied the knot.

 • My brothers and sister in law came to show their love and support

(my parents sadly have not accepted this marriage)

 • My older brother giving me away

 • Being able to share this special day with our closest friends and family

 • Looking around to see everyone enjoying themselves and that we made this happen - with your help Blackbrook House!

Do you have any advice for those couples currently planning their wedding?

The obvious ones are to set a budget and make lists.

I would say… do not let your partner get involved in the middle of you organising the whole event! hahaha . Tim let me organise our wedding on my own at first but then wanted to make suggestions which meant “going back to the drawing board!” But in all honesty, don’t get worked up in all the frills.  Part of our problem was trying to accommodate and cater for all and not thinking about us and what we wanted.  This started to get stressful. And trust me you don’t need stress while you’re trying to plan one of the best days of your lives!  It’s your day and decide what you want … together.  Make time with your partner, so you can sit and relax to discuss your big day without any interruptions.

When did you get married

 1st December 2018

Why did you choose Blackbrook House for your wedding

From the first time we walked into Blackbrook House we knew we had found the ideal venue for us. The house had the perfect ambience and setting for our style of wedding.

What style of wedding did you have

We had Black Tie winter wedding, very classic and elegant – made magical with beautiful and tasteful Christmas lighting and candles. It was very much a WOW factor.

What was it like working with us

Lavinia, Steve and all the team were a joy to work with, They understood exactly the type of wedding we wanted and worked very hard with us to achieve it.

What were the highlights

The highlight in the planning was seeing the final results of our ideas coming together.

Did you enjoy planning the food experience and putting together your own menu

Planning the food was a great experience. We had many discussions with Steve on ideas for our ‘dinner party’ style of menu. We worked together to provide a seasonal menu that was perfect for our winter wedding  meal. The taster session was necessary and invaluable to try each of our courses together with wines that complimented the food. Our guests loved our wedding dinner.

Which florist did you choose and why did you choose them

The florist chosen was Alison from  ‘Lilifloralart’. Alison knows Blackbrook House very well and works closely with Lavinia and ensured we kept within our budget. Our theme of all white flowers was beautifully arranged.

Where did you buy your dress?

The dress was from British designer Suzanne Neville. The bridal shop Francis Day Bridal is located in Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

How did you choose your photographer?

Karina Cipikoff  was our photographer. Karina knows Blackbrook House very well and knows where to get the best ‘shots’. She is a joy to work with – very professional.

Tell us about your cake

We didn’t have a wedding cake – we aren’t sure anyone noticed.

What were the highlights of your day?

The highlight of our day was walking into the ceremony room,  made so beautiful  by Lavinia. Everyone was in awe of how amazing it looked – there were many tears shed – it looked so fabulous. Later, walking into dinner after a wonderful  transformation of the room with beautiful table settings, candles and lighting. Several of our guests said it was the best wedding they had ever been to !!

Do you have any advice for those couples currently planning their wedding

Our advice for couples planning a wedding is to remember attention to detail, so the whole day flows seamlessly. Consider the theme of your wedding and remember your budget. At Blackbrook House this is made easier by the wealth of experience Lavinia has and the effort she puts in. We couldn’t have done it without her !!
